Emergency First Aid at work


Course Overview

As an employer, you must provide adequate and appropriate first-aid equipment, facilities, and personnel to ensure employees or patrons receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at your premises.

This classroom based training will help you ensure you have a competent first aider to deliver first-aid needs with a framework around ‘Emergency First Aid at Work’ delivered by a First Aid qualified facilitator and assessor going over the syllabus content outlined in this document.

The course duration is one day with a minimum of 6 and maximum of 8 attendees on each course.

Course Price

£120 plus VAT per person plus £8 certificate and examination fee. Additional fees apply for classroom hire if applicable.

Course Content

Role of the First Aider: Assessment • The importance of aid that is effective, safe, and prompt • Casualty reassurance • Avoidance of cross contamination • Getting help • Requirement for recording of accidents and injuries at work

*Primary survey of casualty: Assessment for danger • Assessment of the casualty’s level of responsiveness • Getting help • Assessment of the casualty’s Airway, Breathing and Circulation (ABC)

*First Aid for the unconscious casualty: Basic airway management • Recovery position

*Delivery of CPR for an unconscious non-breathing adult casualty: Chest compressions • Rescue breaths • Use of barrier device

*Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED): Use of the device • Safety considerations

*First aid for a choking adult casualty: Identification of choking casualty • Provision of back blows and abdominal thrusts

First aid for a casualty experiencing a seizure: Protection of casualty • Aftercare and dignity

*First aid for a casualty who is bleeding: Cross contamination and risk of disease • Use of direct pressure • Application of dressings • Monitoring and reassurance

First aid for a casualty suffering from shock: Causes of shock • Symptoms • Treatment

First aid for a casualty suffering from a burn: Types of burn (dry / wet / electrical / chemical) • Severity of burns • Appropriate treatment

First aid for a casualty suffering from an allergic reaction: Common triggers, symptoms, and treatment • Anaphylaxis • Assisting a casualty to administer their own medication

Subjects marked * will include a practical element to the training.

Assessment by examination of £8 fee applied (with certificate) - Formative assessment will take place throughout.

Whilst all the above content will be included, particular emphasis will be placed on life saving skills such as CPR, use of an AED and choking.

CPR training will include current guidance on techniques to limit risk of Covid 19 transmission.
